SCHOOL KITCHEN GARDEN | Top
The school has won a Junior Landcare grant to establish a kitchen garden. This will provide students with opportunities to grow and cook vegetables while learning about environmental sustainability and nutrition. The project will also demonstrate the possibilities of gardening in small spaces, ideas which can be transferred to homes. The Adelaide East Rotary Club and Soroptimist International of Adelaide are assisting us in establishing the garden. During term 4 we will transform a neglected area into a productive vegetable patch.

OUR NEW LIBRARY | Top
It has been an exciting time in our new Library building. Everyone is enjoying the wonderful sense of space, the attractive new furniture and the excellent facilities. We are now able to take advantage of computer pods for small group-work and independent study. Each class has a regular weekly session in the Library where students borrow books and develop skills for life-long learning. Inquiry units this year have ranged over concepts such as adaptation, life cycles, celebrations, safety, diversity, human rights and healthy lifestyles. Wellbeing and Aboriginal perspectives have been integrated into units. Lunchtimes are a hive of activity with students reading, borrowing, drawing, constructing and playing indoor games.

In term 3 Lea Holland, Workshop Manager at Giant Cycling World in the city, came to talk to rooms 9, 17 and 18 about bicycles and riding. He talked about the parts of a bike, helmets and riding safely. He rode his bike and showed us a few tricks.
“He showed us how to ride a bike.” Sabeer
“I liked it when he jumped and jumped on his bike.” Hotin
“He could balance and bounce on his bike.” Seemu
“I liked his bike.” Hera
“I saw the chain.” Zi Yad
“He was a good rider.” Enzo

SRC ELECTIONS | Top
This year 88 people nominated as candidates for the election of a new Student Representative Council and 253 people cast a vote. The election was conducted using polling equipment provided by the Australian Electoral Commission. A group of year 6/7 students received Electoral Officer training from Greg and took responsibility for running the election and counting the votes. We would like to acknowledge the work of the outgoing council as we welcome in our new elected representatives.

LIBRARY CHALLENGE | Top
Room 13 competed in the Amazing Race: Library Challenge. The theme of the library challenge was the Dewey Decimal system. Students were given clues to find certain books and then write bibliographical information about them. Some events involved mathematical calculations. Every week one pair was eliminated if they came last. The winners were Soreti and Aimee and the runners up were Marisa and Isobel. Everyone had fun while doing the Amazing Race: Library Challenge!

SWIMMING | Top
On the fourth week of school we had a very special swimming week at the Unley Swimming Centre. On the first day of swimming we were assessed and grouped according to our swimming skills. During swimming week we learned lots of stuff related to swimming and water safety. We also learned the four swimming strokes and other survival strokes. Some children said that they really enjoyed swimming. Lots of children said that it was very tiring. We noticed that there are really good swimmers in our school. Everyone gave their best in each swimming lesson. We were transported by buses every day. On the last dasy of swimming we did a whirlpool, which was fun. Our swimming instructors were very good. Everyone had fun swimming.

MAKING DAY | Top
In week 5 junior primary had a creative day called Making Day. It was a day packed with creativity. Making Day was an idea of a junior primary SRC member.

DISTRICT ATHLETICS DAY | Top
On Thursday the 5th of May, 23 students from Gilles Street went to Santos Stadium with Rod and Mr. Tucker to take part in the South East Adelaide District SAPSASA Athletics Carnival. There were events for students from 10 to 13 years of age who were able to compete in 100, 200 and 800 metres, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put and Discuss. We also competed in a number of 4 x 100metre relays. All students are to be praised for the great conduct, attitude, and positive competitive spirit they showed on the day!

OUR PIANO | Top
Room 3 went to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital to see the piano we painted. We all took turns to play it and had fun watching a patient playing it too. The piano will be a permanent addition to the Hospital play deck area, so go have a look and a play!

TEACHING AND LEARNING | Top
Staff at Gilles Street Primary School are working collaboratively in year level to plan units of inquiry which aim at developing deeper understanding, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. The scope and sequence of units centres around the "Four Worlds" : my personal world, the wider world, the natural world and sharing the world. While the New Arrivals Program has its own scope, the same approach is being used. Students learn through a structured inquiry approach, where they question, investigate, organise, think, transform information and reflect about their learning - "Learning is something I do, not something that is done to me." Some units being taught include 'All about me', 'Let's celebrate', 'Our wellbeing', 'Adaptations', 'Matter matters', 'Art mirrors life' and 'Who's in charge?'.
