Specialist Learning at Gilles Street Primary School

Our Specialist Areas program enriches student learning by providing opportunities to explore a broad range of disciplines beyond the core curriculum. Through these subjects, students develop creativity, confidence and essential skills while discovering their individual interests and strengths.

  • Performing Arts

    At Gilles Street Primary School, students take part in Performing Arts each week as a specialist subject, learning through Dance, Drama and Music.

    Our program gives students the opportunity to explore creativity, build confidence and express their ideas in a supportive and engaging environment. Students learn the key elements and skills of each art form while creating, performing and responding to different performances and artistic works.

    Through the Performing Arts, students develop communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills, while also discovering how the arts connect to culture, storytelling and learning across the wider curriculum

  • Physical Education

    Our Physical Education program aligns with the South Australian Curriculum and provides students with purposeful opportunities to develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, resilience, and a strong understanding of health and wellbeing through inclusive and engaging learning experiences.

    We strive to build confident, capable learners who value fair play and develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Key events in our school sporting calendar include our Term 1 School Cross Country Carnival and our Term 3 Sports Day, where students challenge themselves, celebrate achievement, and demonstrate true school spirit.

  • EAL/D

    The English as an Additional Language and/or Dialect programme supports students from the many cultures around the world. Each student’s story differs, reflecting where they were born, migrated from or their world experiences. Our EALD model is a positive one, where cultures and points of view are celebrated.

    Our EALD teacher supports students to negotiate and self monitor English across the curriculum, through the use of the LEAP levels. Literacy is considered as a repertoire of practices with a wide range of texts from traditional to new communications technologies. Students are also taught how to understand and construct texts critically, to become savvy users.

  • Science (Mainstream only)

    Students engage with the South Australian Curriculum: Science. Through weekly hands-on lessons, students are supported to explore and understand how the world around them works. They observe, question, predict and investigate by collecting and analysing results to develop evidence-based explanations using appropriate scientific language. Students build key learner dispositions such as curiosity, responsibility and open-mindedness as they engage with the four strands of Science: Biological Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, Physical Sciences and Chemical Sciences.

  • Spanish (Mainstream only)

    Gilles Street Primary School recognises that understanding other cultures through learning an additional language enables cultural connections with global communities. The learning of a language develops students' dispositions, so that they can become community-minded, reflective and empathetic learners. Additionally, students have an opportunity to further develop their social responsibility, multilingual thinking and intercultural communication as participants and contributors in the language classroom. Spanish is our language of choice and is provided to mainstream students from Reception to Year 6 for 50 minutes per week.

  • Digital Technolgies (Junior Primary/IELP)

    At Gilles Street Primary School, students in the Junior Primary years and the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) participate in specialist Digital Technologies lessons designed to help them build confidence and independence when using technology. Students learn how to be safe and responsible digital citizens while exploring different ways technology can be used to communicate, create and share ideas. Through guided activities and hands-on learning, students become familiar with a range of digital tools and develop important skills for learning in today's digital world.
